Until recently I had never thought of postcards as anything other than
a souvenir to send friends and family from a trip abroad. It wasn't
until I met 757Len, an airline postcard collector, that I learned how
wrong I was. After cataloging Len's collection
of over 1000 postcards I realized that there is a lot more to postcards
than I had thought.
First, that these postcards come in all sorts of
shapes and sizes; and there is a dedicated group of collectors for each
and every size, shape and subject. Airline postcards is a very popular
niche for postcard collectors and after some research I realized there
was a thriving community of collectors who collect these postcards
exclusively. After a while, as I scanned almost 1000 of these
postcards, I started noticing that sometimes I didn't have to read the
back of the card to know which plane was being featured. I also found
myself mysteriously drawn to aviation TV shows like Mayday and Jetstream.
I've never been into aviation before, in fact I'm pretty scared of
flying, but after seeing so many of these postcards I think a little
bit of the collecting bug must have rubbed off on me. While I am in no
hurry to go out there and start buying up all the airline postcards
floating around but I think next time I fly I just might ask the flight
attendant to for a postcard to start my collection.
